Emmy Fashion 2014

The Emmys had a serious case of the Mondays this year. If you couldn’t tell from the multiple jokes laid on thhhhick by Seth Meyers in his intro monologue– they actually took place on a Monday, which is weird– and if celebrities are anything like me (and obviously if they like to double down on Ched ‘R’ Peppers and Mozzarella Sticks at Sonic, they ARE), getting dressed up to go to an event on a Monday nights sounds pretty terrible. So, I wasn’t super impressed by the fashion, save for a couple of major WOW moments, and thought it was pretty sloppy overall, but I get it. Mondays are for yoga pants, not ballgowns. Here are some of the ladies that nailed it.

Best1Julia Roberts looked so sassy in this short dress. I love the texture, shape, and the shoes and casual hair were styled wonderfully. I think this look is so “her” but fancy-version… love it. Sofia usually bugs me with the constant jewel tone mermaid gowns, but this one is different. I love the structure and overall styling, with the glam-yet-soft hair, and geometric earrings that complement the light detail on the dress. The look is much more contemporary than she usually goes, and it def works.  Best2How freaking darling does Kiernan Shipka look? I swear her stylist is a genuis, because every awards show, she looks fashionable but age appropriate, which must be SO hard to do with teenage girls. I love the length of this dress, and the drop waist detailing adds a “high fashion” touch. Hair and shoes- perfection. And Sarah Hyland was one of my FAVORITE of the night. Seriously, this is what I want to look like all of the time. It’s a modern spin on Gwyneth’s pink Oscar dress—so classic, but with a young, fun twist that totally hits the mark. Love the colors, love the hair, love everything. I can’t stop looking at it.  Best3Debra Messing and Camila Alves rocked these classic silhouettes with cut-out patterns. Seriously, rocked. Not really sure what Matthew McConaughey is wearing but I loved his and Woody’s presentation speech so I’ll let this slide. Jimmy Kimmel’s joke about him winning the BET for Best Male Artist of the year was also REALLY funny… So even though the fashion was kinda ehhh, at least the jokes were good. Best4Gwen Stefani looked amaze in this Versace number. It was so chic and glam and cool… as I imagine her to be. And Julia Louise Dreyfus… I can’t even. She looks like a million bucks.

bestThese two were my faves of the night… and Sarah Hyland, but Lizzy Caplan’s train was too long for me to show all three of them together. Loved Allison William’s modern gown. I thought it was the perfect balance between elegant and quirky, Carrie Bradshaw but without any overly obnoxious touches. Girlfriend might need to join me at Sonic for some mozz sticks, but other than that, she looks great. Lizzy Capan freaking KILLED IT. I love her (Party Down, anyone?) but her style has always seemed a bit… not this. This is so sleek and glam, fits her well, and is styled to perfection. A+. And then… there’s this… Worst2Katherine Heigl. Blanche Devereaux called, and she wants her gown back. And Amanda Peet. WTF is wrong with your hair. Nay, WTF is wrong with whoever let you leave the house like that?! I didn’t love the dress either… I couldn’t even tell she was pregnant from the front and thought she just picked the most unflattering dress EVER… It’s cuter from this angle, and by cuter I mean “less frumpy like a couch, more frumpy like a window treatment”…in a dorm room. In the 70’s. Vom. Worst1Dear Lena Dunham. We get it. You are not to be defined. You are not to be put in a box. You do you, girl. But, can I just ask, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?! This wouldn’t look good on ANYONE. Freaking Gisele couldn’t pull off the ombre tiered tulle skirt with the poofy cap sleeve button down. I just really hope she was never photographed next to Sarah Hyland, because I think they might have been going for the same look, and one totally worked and the other is this. Also. The hair. And the makeup. And in the other corner, we have Mayim Bialik, who decided to do her best sister-wife drapery jewel tone Renaissance Festival impression. The fact that she doesn’t have a man in a puffy white shirt and a feathered cap playing the lyre next to her is really throwing me off.  Worst3After those last two, these almost seem like they should be bumped up to BEST dressed, but I just wasn’t loving Anna Gunn’s look. Very seventies, but overdone, between the hair and the color palette… I could have done with one or the other but all together it is just a little off. Laura Prepon. Is that flappy thing a collar?  There’s just a lot going on here. Worst4Last but not least, Kerry Washington’s weird Halloween dress… A little too sparkly, a little too much black-sequin shorts coming out of the slit. Also, the hair. (I know, I know, it was a MONDAY). And I really didn’t like Taylor’s dress. I think nude is over, it didn’t fit that well, and it makes her look dead. If you want to know what I really think.

What did you think about the fashion this year!?

This Dress…

1112_ZwebenI saw this picture on Instagram a few weeks ago and my mouth hit the ground so hard that I just about fell out of my chair. I immediately stalked it, and of course, it’s a Vera, the most classic and quintessentially (spelled that right on the first try! Whoop! Gonna be a good day!) “wedding” dress designer. I love me some Monique and Carolina, but there’s just something about Vera. This dress is amazing in its silhouette and fit, but I think what really gets me is that light as air lace. Dying. 0177_Zweben0260_Zweben0598_ZwebenAnd how about that MOB dress? Serious style in this family!

Oscar Fashion 2014

Well, it’s that time of year again when all of the beautiful people in Hollywood come out to dazzle us plebians with gorgeous gowns and blingy rocks. My mother-in-law refers to Oscar night as her “Superbowl Sunday”. I think Ellen pretty much stole the show and has my vote for BEST HOST EVER. But since re-reading jokes that she made would probs be supes boring for everyone, let’s dive right into the fashion! Best dressed or worst dressed first?! Ok. Best.

Oscars BD1

My absolute favorite of the night was Kate Hudson. She. looked. SMOKIN. I love the color and cut of her gown– very flattering for her, and that cape adds a classy detail that makes the whole look tres chic and unique. Kate for the WIN! (Besides Ellen, of course). And J.Law. I love that she fell down again. Why we are not best friends yet is completely beyond me. L-o-v-e this color red on her, her hair looks great, the dress is flattering, and her necklace, again, makes the outfit.
Oscars BD2

OH MY GOSH. I am so over nude dresses after seeing so many of them on the red carpets last year, but I LOVE love LOVE both of these looks. I died when I saw Cate Blanchett, and immediately pinned her for my best dressed. That dress is AMAZING, the details are beautiful, her jewelry and hair is perfect to complement the overall style, and the color doesn’t wash her out (thank you very much, Kristin “Oompa Loompa” Cavallari–who, I might add, also looked gorgeous but when she hated on this dress, I kinda wanted to whoop up on her a little bit). Jenna Dewan Tatum just flat out kills it in this nude number as well. Again, no color wash-out, and an absolutely gorgeous dress that I just want to dive into. Channing Tatum for the ultimate win (Sorry, Ellen). So. Now. Can we all agree that nude/blush dresses have reached their zenith? Yes. Let’s move back into colors now, please.
Oscars BD3

These bluesy babes are perfection. Love Sandra’s beautiful navy and classic styling. Love Lupita’s “Nairobi blue” Prada, and I was soooo undecided on the headband last night, but I think I like it. At first, I was all… “Is it too 11 year old?!” But now I think it’s super chic, and I will be happy to debate anyone who thinks otherwise. Also, her speech was so sweet and she just looked so genuinely happy (I’m looking at you, Anne Hathaway 2013) that her whole image was just radiant.
Oscars BD4

I really like Bette Midler’s dress by Reem Acra. I’ve read some bad reviews, but how amazing does she look!? I think it is age appropriate, fun, and fits her like a glove. Jennifer Garner’s is simple and lovely. I’m usually not a fan of silver dresses, but I like the fringe and the classic cut. Her hair is beautiful and definitely makes the look work.
Oscars BD6

Naomi Watts, I wasn’t sure about at first. I thought that geometric/art deco necklace was a bit much for the dress, but now seeing it with the whole look (clutch and shoes), I get it, and think it’s pretty. Portia = ROCKING. IT. She looks so freaking gorg (minus a little frozen Botox face). I love the cut of the dress, and the cut-outs/pattern, and her styling is impeccable. Ellen, way to go sista! Oscars BD7

Kate Hudson obviously get it from her mama! Go Goldie. Meryl, looking chic and timeless.
Oscars BD8

A few of the hunky men… Leo, looking great. Kevin, love the navy blue tux-ado a la George Banks, and Bradley, call me, maybe? Wowza.
Oscars BD9

Ok, these are three that I wasn’t sure about. I like the idea of all of them but something is just off. Charlize’s skirt and train are to die for, but the top doesn’t really fit all that impressively, and that necklace sort of makes her neck look thick. Anne’s is cool and modern, but with her hair was a bit intense for me (plus those rocks were sooo shiny that they were distracting while she was presenting), and Amy Adams’ dress is gorgeous, and the fabric while she was moving was absolutely awesome, but her hair was so bizarre… it looked like she was a citizen of the Capital in the Hunger Games. Strange tilt/wave thing on one side that I was NOT digging.Oscars BD10

And last but not least, these two couples absolutely slayed it. LOVED Matthew McC’s white jacket with the tux, and his wife looks so ethereal. Her dress was chic, and the color is perfection. Plus that kiss when he won… Just the sweetest thing EVER. And Olivia Wilde might be the most beautiful pregnant woman I have ever seen. She and Jason totally rocked the red carpet, looking as stylish as ever. I love his navy tux, and her dress was totally bump-flattering, and that peek of white in the back? Brilliant. I have a feeling they are fun as heck, too. Maybe Marc and I should start stalking BBQ joints whenever they come to KC (Jason’s hometown) because I think we could be bestie couple friends. Or at the very least, their maid of honor/best man at their wedding.

Now to the worst…

Oscars WD2

Just a few days ago, I was talking to one of my best friends about how chic I thought it was that Yolanda from RHBH always wears monochromatic jewel tone outfits. I must have been speaking too loudly, because Liza obvi overheard, mistranslated, and took my idea out to pasture and shot it. With a machine gun. This is the result… a Boy George/Hugh Hefner extravaganza. Anna Kendrick, whom I love, just flat-out picked an ugly dress. There is nothing else to be said about it… it’s just fug. Love her clutch, though.

Oscars WD3

I heart Kerry Washington, and she is glowing and beautiful baking that baby, but these colors – BARF. That purple is Nicole Miller circa 1993, and in satin… just no. Bridesmaid dress disaster. Her lip color compliments the color of her dress, and by that, I mean the whole thing makes me think of silk flowers in a funeral home. And this chica in the turquoise… WHAT THE F*CK WERE YOU THINKING?! This makes her baby belly look like a beer belly and it is just bizarre to look at. Look away. Faster.
Oscars WD4

Ahh, the case of the ill-fitting black dress. You think you’re playing it safe by wearing black, but BAM! What do you know? You’re still a celebrity so people still want to take your picture (duh). Emma Watson’s just make me think “droopy and itchy” with a strange fit, and ambiguous fabric. Love the cut of Glenn Close’s dress, but it looks like an industrial strength trashbag material, and the last girl’s looks like it might be from Bebe… which I think in combination with those bangs is just a little bit NOT FOR THE OSCARS. It’s the trashy cousin of Kate Hudson’s look. Her clutch is cool, though.
Oscars WD5

Dax- I am not sure about the tie clip. All I could think about was one of my old math teachers. Kristin looked like what I would assume I thought to be “perfection” in 1999. The lace, the corset in the back, the wispy bangs pulled out around her face from her center part… yuck. And Jessica Biel… I canNOT pin down what I don’t like about this, but I really really don’t like it. Possibly her ombre hair… possibly the color of the dress against her skin tone… Also, I wasn’t sure that she is allowed to attend major events like this without JT? 7th Heaven must carry more weight around Hollywood than we know.
Oscars WD6

Penelope… did we learn NOTHING from Jennifer Lawrence’s Golden Globe dress? Ew. And I am pretty convinced Julia Roberts just doesn’t give a sh*t about fashion after seeing her at the last few awards shows. The top of this dress didn’t fit her at all, and when I first saw it, the lace piece on her chest looked like a tattoo.
Oscars WD7

Marc had some pretty choice words about this actress from Blue Jasmine… Here are some of the more appropriate ones: “WOOF!” “Did she get left out in the rain?” “I think she forgot to shave her face”. I’ll leave it at that. Pharrell makes me happy, but this outfit was def better suited (PUN!) for the Grammys.
OscarsWD1Um…. no. Just no. Unless you were wearing this to show Elsa (beer belly preggo chick) a more appropriate dress for her to wear, methinks you better exit stage left. Louise Roe’s is a pretty color, but it looks like something that I could afford and that’s really not what I want to see at the Oscars.

So there you have it! As my husband so lovingly reminded me as I was judging away, the main difference between these people and me is that they’re walking down the red carpet, and I’m sitting in sweats eating tacos. So with that in mind… judge away! What did everyone think of the fashion this year?

Bridal Week 2013

Bridal Week wrapped up in NYC two weeks ago, and these are some of the gorgeous dresses I was gawking at on Instagram (via NYT Fashion). You should seriously be allowed to buy/wear a wedding dress more than once in your life! Without having to be Kim Kardashian.

Highlighting the back was a huge trend, and I love this detail.

Pretty pop of something blue!

I know we’re all thinking she needs a cheeseburger or five, but just look at that DRESS. Absolutely breathtaking, the fabric looks like it would melt in your mouth, and I love the idea of the “cape” draping off the back.

So, ignore the weird tribal bride headpiece.. how AMAZING is that bodice?! So feminine and delicate, and I love how it looks with the skirt. LOVE.

Vera was thinking pink, and I love the classic shape of this one

Apple Picking

Yesterday was jammed packed with non-work related activities (so today I am having massive work-related panic attacks) and I went to a luncheon at the Nelson (KC’s fabo museum) featuring interior designer Charlotte Moss (more on that tomorrow) and then went to a Junior League event at the apple orchard! I hadn’t picked an apple from a tree, not a bin, for about twenty years, so it was a blast from the past, and just a straight up blast! For Kansas Citians reading, the Cider Hill Family Orchard is absolutely darling. They have apple picking, a pumpkin patch, fishing ponds, a firepit for s’mores and too many beautiful vistas to count. I am already planning to host a certain baby boy’s first birthday party there next fall! I wore a snuggly cashmere moomoo (my new totally smashing wardrobe staple), jeans, and Fry boots, but if I had my druthers (have ALWAYS wanted to say that), this is what I would have worn! applepickin2Shop it all here

Rehearsal Dinner Dresses that Shine

I am a big believer in branding… your company, yourself, your wedding… make things YOU, and keep them consistent. I’m certainly not against a little flair or a random pop here and there, but it has much more impact if you are typically branded to a T. So. For fall rehearsal dinners, I am not a huge fan of stark white dresses. It just doesn’t seem to “go”. That being said, it is YOUR weekend to wear white, so if you want to wear it 24-7, you go girl. But for really playing up to that warm fall harvest season, why not try a rehearsal dinner dress that is just off white, and still lets you shine? Literally. I love all of these embellished and shiny dresses for a rehearsal. Peep ’em below.glitterehearsaldinner

The 2013 Emmy Awa–Oh wait, Breaking Bad is on.

The Emmy Awards (aka outlet for distraction during the countdown to Breaking Bad) were on Sunday, and while many are calling the fashion “boring”, I think it was all actually quite “classy”. Call me crazy, but I’m over the nude color plastic bikinis twerking all over the internet lately, ya know? Here are some of the best and worst of the night:

First up: YUCK. Daring? No. Just kinda slutty for slutty’s sake? Yes.  I actually love the color and beading, but I think the bikini bottom and sheer skirt make this look like a Pam Anderson trainwreck kind of dress. Pass.

slide_317266_2938916_free Love the color and overall style here, with her retro hair and makeup. Love the dress, really, but it seems about 4 sizes too big with that dropped waist. slide_317266_2938938_free Amazing. Love it all.slide_317266_2938939_freeSo when I first saw this dress, I thought, ok! Awesome! At least she isn’t wearing what she wore to the Oscars… and it’s kinda cute and hipsterish, I get it. But then I started to hate it. It looks like it was designed by Roxy Quiksilver circa 2000. The best review of her hair that I’ve read came from D-Listed: “That hair looks like it was cut with safety scissors by a pre-schooler with severe ADHD.” Preach.
slide_317266_2938972_free I still don’t know what this chick’s name is, only that it’s a weird one, but I LOVE THIS DRESS! Gorgeous color on her, fits like a glove, great hair and make-up… A+ to you, (insert name here)!slide_317266_2939619_free Looking age appropriate and stylish…slide_317266_2938884_free Redheads can wear so many great colors. This is not one of them.slide_317266_2938887_free I am obsessed with Leslie Mann. For some reason people say that I remind them of her, or her characters from movies. Not sure where that comes from, but moving on… I really like this dress and her messy, sexy style, which definitely stood out from all of the “safe” dresses without being the Pam Anderson bikini sheer dress…It looks a LITTLE dirty, but overall is chic, so kudos to Leslie. slide_317266_2938926_free I like this, and do you know why? Because it is what Carrie Underwood (keep reading) was trying to do, but it is contemporary and not prom-ish. Michelle pulls off the classic awards show “ballgown” in a modern way, and I think it’s cool and really works. slide_317266_2938929_free Love this dress, HATE the straps that make her look like a puffy linebacker. So close, so close.slide_317266_2938969_free So that’s where all of the fabric from the Borgias set went after the show was cancelled… Gag. Even her hair can’t save her from that velvet. slide_317266_2938973_free Best dressed. So age-appropriate, simple, clean, classic and beautiful. Plus her shoes were totally killer (couldn’t find a picture). slide_317266_2939001_freeI love Aubrey Plaza, and I think this dress is so HER that I am into it. It’s different but not offensive, and it communicates her quirkiness. slide_317266_2938670_free Complicated name girl from Girls…. Your face says it all.slide_317266_2938675_free Adorable. I think she totally nailed it. Perfect for her age, fun, and pretty. slide_317266_2938710_freeI don’t know about this picture, but when I was watching the red carpet, this dress looked totally amazing, so I threw it on here. I like the classic Hollywood glam factor, and you can’t tell in this photo, but her hair is pulled back in an awesome, thick, simple ponytail, which kept the whole thing looking fresh.
slide_317266_2938711_free This dress, Amanda, is appropriate to wear during two occasions. ONE: You are the looney toon from Jane Eyre, who Mr. Rochester locks up in Thornfield because you one CRAZY b*tch (and his WIFE, dum-dum-DUM) or TWO: You are the looney toon from any Lifetime movie that probably does at least one of the following: stalks an ex-lover, gazes at a wall mural of pictures of your best friend…. that you’re stalking, talks to a family member that has been dead for ten years and you keep stuffed in your bedroom, or thinks they can communicate with ghosts. slide_317266_2938712_freeTina- nailed it. Great color, cut, and overall style!slide_317266_2938899_freeMalin totally slays it with this amazing dress.
slide_317266_2938917_free Like WHO ON EARTH TOLD YOU THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA? Color- barf. Black belt with that color- barf. That necklace with that color- barf. That hair with that color- barf. It just looks so 80’s and dead to me, I can’t even look at it anymore. slide_317266_2938918_freeL-o-v-e how this dress flatters her figure! A+.
slide_317266_2938940_free January Jones, starring as the looney toon from Jane Eyre… Just kidding. She seems like a total psycho, but her dress is beautiful. slide_317266_2938968_free Ok, so this girl won an Emmy, and I’ve seen her on Nurse Jackie. She’s good. She’s great. She’s spunky and quirky, and you can tell that from her body language in this photo. Now ignore that, and focus on how well she dresses her body. She looks so chic, and is accessorized well to boot. If she was posed like a pro, she would look like a million bucks. Take a hint, Lena Dunham. slide_317266_2938998_free LOVE. THIS. Also, she’s in Breaking Bad, so she’s automatically awesome.slide_317266_2938797_free So beautiful, Zooey! Great color!slide_317266_2938809_free Are you freaking kidding me? If I look 1/8 this good when I’m her age, I will consider my life a total win.slide_317266_2938848_free Love it, love it, LOVE IT! Again- Lena, take note.slide_317266_2938897_free I think this dress is amazing, and I love how she styled it. It’s very contemporary yet still appropriate for this event. Well done. slide_317266_2938928_free

That wraps it up, folks! What did you think about the fashion?!
